Childrens Book Review: Nathan and Nicholas Alexander by Lulu Delacre

Nathan and Nicholas Alexander by Lulu Delacre is a childrens book about sharing and friendship.

While Nathan the elephant is sleeping, he hears noises coming from his toy chest. He climbs out of bed and peeks inside the toy chest to determine the source of the noise. Then, something bites him on his snout. A little mouse pops up from the toy chest and claims the chest belongs to him. Nathan the elephant protests and claims he is the rightful owner of the chest. After a short, unresolved argument, Nicholas, the little mouse begins to clean out his chest. He cleans his chest by tossing Nathan the elephant's toys onto the floor. Then, he proceeds to dust and polish the inside of his little toy chest home. Nathan is not happy. He doesn't want to share the toy chest with Nicholas, the little mouse.

Nathan takes another peek inside the toy chest. He sees that Nicholas has not only cleaned the inside of the chest, but he has divided it into two equal parts. He hung one sign on his side of the chest which read "Nicholas." He had hung another sign on the other side of the toy chest which read "Nathan." Nathan decides that Nicholas probably is a smart little mouse and he might make a good friend after all. Nathan begins to think of all the things the two can teach each other. Nathan the elephant apologizes to Nicholas the little mouse for his behavior. Nicholas the little mouse forgives Nathan and the two decide to become friends. They plan a fishing trip, put away all their toys, and climb into their beds. The story ends with the two little characters recognizing the beginning of "an extraordinary friendship."
