Christian Movies: Sherwood Baptist Church

74

By Tina Truelove

In 1956, Sherwood Baptist Church was founded in Albany, Georgia. In 2002, a set of brothers, Alex and Stephen Kendrick were on the pastoral staff at Sherwood Baptist Church. They came across a national poll which indicated that television and film were a greater influence on culture than individual churches. The two brothers then founded the church's film production company, Sherwood Pictures.

The Kendrick brothers believe in the power of prayer. They also enter the film-making journey cautiously. They have stated that they do not produce films for their own gain and glory. They produce films for the glory of God and do not enter the process of developing a film unless they feel a call from God to produce a particular film.

Sherwood Pictures has successfully produces three family films which are appropriate for viewing by all ages. Families can view these movies with their children and discuss the stories and God's power as it is demonstrated in the lives of the people in the films. These films are brimming with biblical truths and character building story lines that are a must see for all families.

His dishonesty affects the relationships around him. His own wife and son cannot trust him. Jay's personal project involves the restoration of a classic automobile, a convertible. During the restoration of the vehicle, Jay realizes God's own project of restoration - himself, Jay Austin. Jay began to feel convicted about his own actions. He made a commitment to honor God through his business and the relationships around him.

Facing The Giants

Sherwood Pictures' second film was titled Facing the Giants. The film's sports theme is believed to have contributed to its international appeal. Facing the Giants is a heartwarming story about a high school football coach, Grant Taylor, whose world is falling apart around him. Shiloh Christian Eagles Coach Grant Taylor demonstrates an unfailing faith in God and trusts Him even when his situation seems hopeless. Facing the Giants is a drama that will keep you both laughing and crying while watching the events in this incredible story unfold.

Fireproof

Sherwood Pictures third film was Fireproof . The movie was filmed using 500 volunteers. Sherwood Pictures relies largely on volunteers for the making of their movies. Most of those volunteers are members of Sherwood Baptist Church.

In the movie, Fireproof , Captain Caleb Holt (played by actor Kirk Cameron) is a firefighter. Fighters have a "saying" that they hold seriously, like an oath - Never leave your partner behind. Caleb and his wife, Catherine, have been married for seven years, but their marriage is failing. During preparations for divorce proceedings, Caleb's father asks him to try a series of actions outlined in a journal which he has titled, The Love Dare . Caleb's parents, having suffered their own marital difficulties, attempt to guide Caleb through the Love Dare challenge in an effort to help Caleb save his marriage and - never leave his partner behind. Caleb at first resists, having little faith in God's love for him or the power of God in his life. However, Caleb accepts the challenge.

To find out how God works through Caleb and influences his marriage and the lives around him, you will need to watch Fireproof and watch the events unfold.

The Love Dare is a real journal in the form of a book which can be purchased online or in a local store. The challenge is real, the love is real, and the power of God's plan for marriage is real. See the movie and "dare" to allow the Love Dare to renew your own marriage.

Sherwood Pictures is in the process of developing a fourth film, Courageous. Look for it in theaters soon.

I've seen all of their movies except "Fireproof" which is on my list to see. It's good to see professional, quality Christian films being made. I've seen quite a few Christian films through the years and while the messages may be good the quality of the production and acting was usually sub-par. Many non-believers won't sit through them to get the intended message. The Kendrick brother's films don't have that problem and are quite entertaining. I hope they keep it up!

Yes, Richard, so do I. I have noticed the same things about the quality of film in other Christian films as well. I also like the "Left Behind" series, but I think that though they had good actors, the quality of the films could have been better. I too, have thought about the fact that non-believers would pay much more attention to better quality films such as the Sherwood films. The Kendrick bothers also do a great job of integrating real life, clean comedy into their films. I am looking forward to Courageous. Thank you for commenting!

I have seen all of these, and the Sherwood films get better and better each time as far as quality of production. I liked Fireproof the best and look forward to the next one!

Me too, Shawna. I can't wait until it comes out! The neatest thing is that they make those movies with such low budgets compared to typical Hollywood films. I have heard some very inspiring stories about how they needed things that was there budget would not provide and yet God put people around them that donated things they needed. The house that was blown up was donated! The actors also donate their time and they are not "professional" as Hollywood would consider. I think even Kirk Cameron donated his time. He heard about what they were doing and wanted to be a part of it. He asked to participate - for free! I look forward to watching God bless the world through those people and films.

Great to hear from you again!

I just heard on the radio about another Christian film that is coming out soon called "What If" by the makers of Left Behind . I hope that one does well too!

Really? I have not heard that. I will definitely watch it. I pretty much put my life on hold while I read all the books, back to back. I am glad to see more and more of these movies being produced. Now, if we can just get rid of all those reality shows on television and put some wholesome family dramas back on - that would be great.

Stephen,

Thank you for your comments. It truly was a wonderful, inspiring movie. I share your prayer for the Kendrick brothers and the others who serve. We live in Georgia and I have often thought of how wonderful it would be if I could drive down there and be an extra in one of the movies just so I could be part of such an inspiring ministry. I can't wait to see what is coming next!

May the Lord bless you as well, Sophie Taku! I have watched Courageous three times now. I need to update this Hub but I haven't had much time to write lately. I'll get to it eventually. :)

I have seen all four movies and each time I have laughed and cried. May God continue to bless your ministry in the name of Jesus.

I appreciate how each movie indirectly builds on one another. First, accepting Christ, then the process of becoming closer to God and having faith, building a Godly marriage, and the man taking his rightful position as the Godhead in a family. I have possibly over simplified the movies themes; however, it is the thread I have seen woven throughout the movies.

I will continue to purchase these movies and give them as gifts.

God will continue to bless your ministry!!!

Vebacee,

You have given me insight into these movies I have failed to notice. I didn't realize the "woven thread" of accepting Christ (Flywheel), having faith (Facing the Giants), building a Godly marriage (Fireproof), and then men taking their place in the family as Godhead (Courageous). Thank you for pointing that out. Now I love these movies even more and I didn't think that was possible. God bless you!
