Choosing a Research Science Project

Choosing the right research science project can prove to be a fearsome task for any grade level, but if you choose a topic that interests you, the project might be a little easier to complete successfully. If you are interested in the project, you will likely spend more time on it and you are less likely to wait until the last minute to get started. If you are having trouble choosing a topic of interest to you, choose a project that benefits consumers or helps people prepare for particular events. Most people would be interested in the various ways they can save money by purchasing the batteries that really do last longer or how they can use solar energy for everyday tasks. Whatever topic you choose, keep your project informative and present it attractively.

Snowflakes

Research the formation of snowflakes. Snowflakes form in tiny patterns which are unique to each flake. Research and discover the reasons for such uniqueness. Describe the relationship between the shape and density of snowflakes and the temperature of the atmosphere. Include images of snowflakes which show the intricate designs of various flakes and include information about snowflake designs and patterns.

Natural Disasters

Study natural disasters such as floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes.  Report on the various causes of such disasters and weather or not progress is being made toward predicting them. How have predictions changed throughout history?  How do natural disasters impact the affected area before, during, and after the disaster happens?  Inform your audience and readers of the various ways people can aid in disaster relief efforts.  Create an attractive display board to accompany your research paper.  Display photos and statistics.  Provide emergency numbers for your local area in case of such an event.  Display the information on your board and provide the information on index cards so that those viewing your finished project may take the information with them.

Solar Energy

Research the ways people can supply their homes with solar energy. Provide information including the definition of solar energy and how it works. Do a simple experiment such as creating a solar oven and present an outdoor demonstration. Obtain a cardboard box and line it with aluminum foil. Do the same thing with a smaller box. Place the smaller box inside the larger box and stuff the area between the boxes with straw. Purchase a box of brownie batter and the needed ingredients to bake the brownies. Check the back of the box for needed additional ingredients. Prepare the brownie mixture as directed and place the batter in a small aluminum or tin pan. Place the small pan of brownie batter inside the smaller inner box and cover the top with clear plastic wrap. The clear wrap protects the brownie mixture from unwanted debris and insects. Place the open side in direct sunlight. Although it might take an hour or two, possibly longer, the brownies should bake in the man-made solar oven. If the brownies fail to bake, include possible reasons in your research paper. Possible reasons for failure might include, but are not limited to: not enough sunlight, not enough heat, insufficient amount of straw insulation, or too much brownie mixture.

Test Batteries

Battery manufacturers claim their particular brand lasts longer than any other. Put their claims to the test. Obtain several different brands of batteries and several types of test appliances such as flashlights. Place the same size and type of battery into the same size and type of flashlight and turn on the flashlights. Observe which brand of battery dies first. Do the experiment several times to determine if the same brand dies first every time. Then, do the test again but with a different test appliance such as small lamps. Test the batteries in several lamps of the same size and brand. Again, try the experiment several times to determine if the same brand lasts longer each time. Record the details of your experiment and add a detailed backboard to an attractive table display.
