Grandmother's Cookies

Noone could make desserts better than my grandmother. I am blessed enough to be the first of fourteen cousins and we all used to gather at her house often. There was one thing of which we could always be sure - there would always be lots of food and the best desserts ever made would adorn her counter tops. One of my favorites was her chocolate oatmeal no-bake cookies. A few years before she passed away, I asked her for her recipe and she gladly shared it with me. It is a simple recipe with no secret ingredients, but it does take a good bit of practice to get them just right. Now, I'll share the recipe with you.

Ingredients:

2 Cups Sugar

1/2 Cup Milk

1 Stick Butter

1/4 Cup Coa-Coa

1 and 1/2 Cups Quick One Minute Oatmeal

1 Teaspoon Vanilla Flavoring

1/4 Cup Peanut Butter

Directions:

In a boiler, add Sugar, Butter, Milk, and Coa-Coa. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Once the mixture reaches the boiling point, reduce heat from high to medium-high and continue stirring for another 1 min. 30 seconds. At the sound of the timer, remove from heat and add peanut butter immediately. Stir in the peanut butter quickly. Add vanilla. Then add the oatmeal. Stir quickly as the mixture will begin to harden immediately. Spoon onto aluminum foil and allow the cookies to cool. Enjoy with a tall glass of cold milk.

Tips:

My grandmother's original recipe called for 2 cups of oatmeal and 1/2 cup peanut butter. After about a year of attempting the recipe only to get cookies that were too hard or didn't harden at all, I decided to try variations. It took me two years to perfect the recipe as I just shared it. The trick is to use the same boiler every time. I also always use the same brands. I tried a different brand of butter once, but the cookies did not turn out well. I always use the same boiler, the same brands of ingredients, and the same utensils.

If you try my recipe as I shared it and your cookies do not turn out, try adding more or less of either the peanut butter and/or the oatmeal. Altitudes and humidity can also affect the outcome of the cookies. Use the ingredients above, but you might have to play around with the recipe for awhile until you discover exactly how much of each ingredient works for you. Once you do, don't change anything. They will turn out perfect every time.

Enjoy!

Wow, that was fast. I just clicked on "Publish". They are my favorite. I am making a few batches now! :)

I grew up on a similar recipe, but it does not have the peanut butter in it. They are called fudge oatmeal cookies.

Fudge oatmeal cookies sounds delicious. I need to get that recipe from you. Please share, Donna!

Do you know more or less how many cookies can I make with the quantities of this recipe?

Tina Truelove 7 months ago

I get 12 to 14 cookies, but they are pretty large. I use my mixing spoon to spoon mine out. If you use a table spoon or something similar in size, you could easily get about 20 (give or take). Thank you for reading and commenting Claudia!

thank you so very much for sharing this recipe of your grandmom. The ingredients are making my stomach crave for them. I can't wait to go home tonight and try them out since I have all the ingredients except for the peanutbutter. Can I still make them without the peanut butter?

Tina Truelove 7 months ago

K Kiss, I know some people do make them without peanut butter, but the recipe is not the same. I tried making this particular recipe without the peanut butter once and all I got was a soupy mixture. I don't know how you might change the other ingredients or substitute something else for the peanut butter and still have a firm consistency. If you get the peanut butter, enjoy them! Remember that if they don't turn out right the first time, play around with the recipe. It might take several tries before you get the right amounts of oatmeal and peanut butter that works with the humidity and altitude where you live. It took me awhile to get it right. Happy oatmeal chocolate cookie eating!

K Kiss, Donna Sundblad (above, in the comment thread) just posted the recipe for Fudge Oatmeal No-Bake Cookies. It looks like the same ingredients, but without the peanut butter. Perhaps you could take a look at her recipe and see if it will work for you.
